About the role
The BSc Applied Cyber Security degree apprenticeship aims to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to protect networks, computers and data from attack, damage or unauthorised access. Apprentices will study one day per week during the academic teaching period, with the remaining four days in employment. The programme combines work-based learning with academic study, delivered over an extended academic year including dedicated skills development weeks. Assessments include class tests, essays, practical assessments, presentations, role-plays, individual and group reports, and an Apprenticeship dissertation project.
Requirements
Applicants must be in full-time relevant employment in a role aligned to the Wales Digital Degree Apprenticeship Framework Specification for Applied Cyber Security. Entry decisions are made in partnership between the University and the Employer. For international apprentices whose first language is not English, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (overall 6.0 with at least 5.5 in all elements).
Working week
Apprentices study one day per week during the academic teaching period, with the remaining four days in employment. Course is taught 1 day per week for 24 weeks of the year.

Training & development
Course delivery includes practical workshops as the primary teaching method, case studies, project-based learning, and active engagement with subject material. Each Degree Apprentice is assigned a Degree Apprenticeship Mentor who meets with the apprentice and employer bi-monthly. The course is taught in person 1 day per week for 24 weeks of the year at the Llandaff campus, supported by Moodle virtual learning environment. On-the-job training and professional competencies are detailed in a three-way learning plan agreed between employer, apprentice and University.
Additional training
A three-way learning plan is agreed between employer, apprentice and University which details on-the-job training and professional competencies within the relevant apprenticeship framework. Progress updates occur every two months. Apprentices have opportunities to participate in employability support initiatives offered by the University.
Future prospects
Successful completion of the Degree Apprenticeship will prepare apprentices to progress in their future careers within the cyber security field. Graduates will have demonstrated professional competencies and behaviour within the workplace, meeting regional skills gaps in cyber security.

Applicants must secure relevant full-time employment in a role aligned to the Wales Digital Degree Apprenticeship Framework Specification for Applied Cyber Security before applying. Entry is determined pre-application by the Degree Apprenticeships Lead, industry link within the programme team and employer representative. Mature applicants with relevant experience or prior learning should contact the apprenticeships team. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may allow direct entry into years 2 or 3 for those with appropriate HND/C or equivalent qualifications.
