About the role

As a Commissioning and Pre-Operations Engineering Degree Apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience with project delivery across the Sellafield site while working towards a Foundation Degree and potentially progress to a Bachelor of Engineering. You will learn about various project types, contributing to the life extension of operational facilities and major projects addressing the UK's nuclear legacy. Your role will include applying industry best practices, conducting commissioning tests, and managing pre-operations activities for effective project handover.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades 9 to 4 (Grades A* to C) including Mathematics, English Language and one Science or Engineering subject. Mathematics GCSE at Grade 6 (Grade B) is essential or Grade C at A Level Mathematics. Minimum of 96 UCAS points at A-Level, T-Level, STEM subjects preferred (e.g., Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Science or Engineering) but not mandatory. Other Level 3 STEM qualifications may be considered. Vocational equivalents at level 3 or higher will also be considered. Candidates will be required to achieve appropriate security and medical clearances.

Training & development

3-month induction programme based at local off-site training facility. Work placements based on Sellafield site or satellite offices. Academic learning 1 day per week at training provider's off-site facility. Some pathways include Practical Engineering Operations at local off-site training facility.
Future prospects
Phase 1: Level 5 ST0380 Nuclear Technician Apprenticeship with Level 5 Foundation Degree/Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering or Science. Phase 2 (for candidates with potential): Level 6 ST0289 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Apprenticeship with Level 6 Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (BEng) or Science (BSc) over a further 2-year period.
